Zack & Nick's Culture Cast

Digesting the lowest rung of pop culture so you don't have to!

Leftover Questions: Prometheus Edition

Note: This write up contains spoilers. Read at your own risk. Additionally, I am on vacation and posting this on an iPad. So please dont expect perfect grammar on my part!!

I have had a few days to digest Ridley Scott’s Prometheus and I have a few burning questions left that I’d like to bring up for discussion. Please feel free to leave comments regarding these questions. Thanks to Nick for an assist on these questions (and I am sure he’ll have his own theories as well).

1. Perhaps the most important question I have from the film is this: Why would the engineers leave symbols all over earth of a map that leads to a bio-weapons development facility?

2. Why would the most expensive, most important space mission of all time have a crew of only 17?

3. Why are Dr. Shaw’s dreams viewed from a 3rd person perspective, and why do her dreams recount factual events as they happened?

4. How come two ostensibly intelligent scientists with tracker beacons and HUDs can get lost so easily in a cave it seemed to take the others 5 minutes to walk out of?

5. Why does the captain seem to relish in the fact that these stressed men are obviously terrified? Does he not care about reassuring his frightened crew?

6. Who told David to infect Dr. Holloway and for what purpose? Why risk the doctor’s life after the film has gone to great length to explain just how important he and Shaw are?

7. Why would the crew, obviously aware of quarantine protocol, let Fifield’s reanimated corpse back into the ship? Why does the captain seem to not even care that the monster just killed 6 of his crew?

8. Why did the awakened engineer almost immediately kill everyone in the alien ship stasis chamber?

These are my burning questions. What are yours?

    9. Just how far can a person run in the immediate wake of invasive surgery deep into their own abdomen?

    10. How is it possible to see a squidlike alien erupt from your own guts and not faint?

    11. Was Prometheus more obviously the first in a chain of films than Casino Royale and The Bourne Identity put together?

You can add Batman Begins to number 11 as well!

At least in the case of Batman Begins, Casino Royale, and (if I remember correctly) Bourne Identity, they were pretty much self-contained and didn’t need a sequel to resolve anything of major importance. Prometheus is clearly a case of “Fuck it. Save it for the sequel.”

    12. Why does the captain (or anyone else for that matter) leave the command center monitoring two clearly frightened crewmen, especially after the idea that an unknown creature is alive down there rose?
    13. Why would two scientists scared shitless return to the main chamber that scared them in the first place to rest for the night?
    14. Why would a previously scared biologist play it cool and friendly when the snake-like creature pops up out of the water?
    15. Why would Shaw become deeply hurt thinking Halloway was talking about her after he makes a sarcastic jab on how life was created on Earth?
    16. Why does Dr. Halloway, a scientist, look and sorta act like a bro?
    17. Why does no one notice that David brings back one of the urns after specifically told no?
    18. How come the alien head is perfectly preserved even though it was laying there for over 2000 years?
    19. Why would Shaw intentionally go the the Engineers’ planet after seeing first-hand they shoot first and ask questions never?
    20. Why did Ridley Scott use my body likeness for the Engineers?

    21. If the “Space Jockeys” are terrified of the Alien bioweapon, why do we see a hologram of them running towards the room where they keep all the samples of it?
