Captain America: Coming to a Theater Near You!

While Nick is much more of a Cap fan than I am, I’m still super psyched about the upcoming Captain America: The First Avenger film. Here are a few reasons why:
1) Joe Johnston is a great choice for director
While Johnston rose from the Spielberg/Lucas mold, he never really had the breakout hit that defined either of those two directors (Raiders, Star Wars) respectively. What he has done is build up an impressive resume of entertaining films filled with Americana. The Rocketeer and October Sky are both indicative of this. While maybe not the “hippest” choice to direct a comic book film, we can at the very least rest assured knowing that Johnston will not fill the movie with quick, jumpy editing cuts and superfluous love triangles.
2) Chris Evans is perfectly cast as Cap
While some decried the choice of Evans as Steve Rogers because of his previous involvement in the Fantastic Four films (which are not related to the current Marvel film universe, I might add), I applauded it. Evans is more than just a pretty face. He has a great sense of humor (Scott Pilgrim), a comic book film past (the aforementioned FF films which he is great in, as well as Push, which is awesome), and a quirky resume that has included high concept fare such as the underrated Cellular and Sunshine.
3) The supporting cast is also excellent
Tommy Lee Jones, Hugo Weaving, Neal McDonough (a veteran “Hey, it’s that guy!” if there ever was one), and Stanley Tucci are all in the supporting cast. That’s a pretty excellent assortment right there. Tucci particularly continues to impress me, especially in smaller roles where he elevates the material considerably (see: Burlesque …actually on second thought, don’t see it).
4) The timing is just right
It’s been a little over a month since Green Lantern bombed and nearly two months since X-Men: First Class underperformed (ed. note: I have not seen it. I have heard it is a great movie. But it underperformed at the box office. You can’t dispute that.). The previous installments in the new Marvel film universe (Thor, Iron Man 1 and 2) have received near universal acclaim and fan adoration. Captain should continue that trend.
I’m ready for an excellent time in the theaters this weekend. Will you be seeing Captain America as well? Let us know!
